The man truly marched to the beat of his own drummer and never got his due IMO. He was bit by the power pop punk bug back in the early days too. I love his cover of Lipstick Traces, and the first two Big Star albums and his first three solo records are on my most played albums of all time list for sure.
Big Star was going to perform at the SXSW fest last night, but he passed away on wed of a heart attack. A tribute was held in his memory, and joining the band were such folk as John Doe of X, Curt Kirkwood (Meat Puppets), Chuck Prophet (Green on Red), Mike Mills of REM, Chris Stamey (the Dbs,) Evan Dando (the Lemonheads.)
Hope there's a way to see or hear it. I was disappointed that SXSW coverage was light this year.
