Craftsmanship my ass!
So a couple weeks back at the L.A. County Fair I did something I rarely do: pay more than I normally would for a particularly striking piece of jewelry that I can make myself.
There was this really cool, unique bracelet that I found myself thinking about for a while after I saw it at the crafter's booth, which is my test to know if it's just a passing whim or something I really want. So I went back and bought it, even as I knew I could make something very similar. It was just such a great piece.
I had only worn it that one day. I wanted to wear it today for someone's going away luncheon at work, so I went to put it on - and one of the pieces came off!
As I examined it I saw that the so-called craftsman had not allowed enough of a tail end when finishing it so that with very little effort it would come off. With something like this you have to allow plenty of give room so it will handle the repeated stress of fastening and wearing.
This is not the first time this has happened with pieces bought from other crafts-people. Rory has bought a couple of necklaces for me from this one shop in Belmont Shores that were made by the same craftsperson. One of them, after only about three wearings, broke and a couple beads lost or broken. When looking at it I saw it too had been constructed very poorly.
Since I take such things into consideration whenever I make a piece - the possible stresses, materials, and sturdiness - I can't understand how these other so-called craftsmen have the nerve to not only sell such shoddy work, but sell it at high prices!
I know - this means nothing to anyone else. I just needed to vent about how no one takes the time/effort to make quality items anymore.
We live in a disposable world. I wanna go back to the real one.
